Sentinel Cave
Several of us from FRG needed a spring trip to get underground; Doug Kent got Lincoln National Forest permits for some caves in the Guadalupe Mountains of New Mexico. In addition to Doug, we were Ed LaRock, Mike Behn, Jen and Barry Berg.
Saturday March 22, 2008, we were off to Sentinel Cave. After a long hike and steep downclimb, Doug found this remote cave. He had been there once before but wanted to show the rest of us the front part of this deep cave. We had a rope to rig the 50-foot entrance pit and another handline to get us to see the Fickle Finger of Fate Room. This is as far as we went.
Little Beauty Cave
After the beautiful sunny weather the day before, Sunday was foggy and cold in the guads. So cold ice was hanging on the trees. Doug was able lead us to this small cave despite the challenge of finding it for the first time. This cave is little over 200 feet in length and best done in conjunction with a trip to Black Cave.
Black Cave
I recalled the path down to Black Cave as we passed it on the way to Little Beauty. Both Doug and Ed had been to the cave before. After the gated entrance, there is about 1000 feet of nicely decorated walking passages with well-marked trails. Colors range from black to red. This is a fine cave to spend a couple hours underground and enjoy.
